New 2022 Ford Expedition Review and Specifications

Ford

Overview

Ford's 2022 Expedition and Expedition Max are the company's two biggest and most versatile family haulers. Although they might not be as easy to get in and out of as a minivan, both SUVs offer three rows of seats, a maximum tow rating of 9300 pounds, as well as the ability to explore rougher terrain. Even though other vehicles in the large SUV segment boast similar attributes, the Expeditions have some advantages too--including a smooth ride quality and spacious cabin.

Although the Ford's entry is nicer to drive than some of its bulkier rivals, such as the GMC Yukon and Chevy’s Tahoe and Suburban, it isn't perfect. Every 2022 Expedition has a V-6 that might not be too fuel-friendly, particularly at highway speeds. Even so, with available features like a 15.5-inch touchscreen and hands-free driving mode set against its stylish exterior, the Expedition remains an option worth considering.

What's New for 2022?

In 2022, the Ford Expedition will get a revised exterior and interior, as well as new features and options. Along with obvious changes to its front end, the cabin will inherit a fresh dashboard design similar to the one seen in the recently redesigned Ford F-150 pickup truck. The Expedition's interior quality will improve thanks to better materials, and its infotainment system will be completely overhauled with a newly standard 12.0-inch touchscreen or an even larger optional 15.5-inch touchscreen.

In addition, Ford offers its BlueCruise hands-free highway driving technology on the Platinum trim level. The new Timberline model has a more rugged appearance with 33-inch all-terrain tires and an increased ride height. A new Stealth Performance package is available on the Limited trim which includes a darker look, a sport-tuned suspension, and a stronger twin-turbo V6 engine.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Expedition is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 with either rear- or four-wheel drive that's motivated by a responsive 10speed automatic transmission. The standard engine makes 380 horsepower and 470 poundfeet of torque but on Limited models, the output gets boosted to 400 horsepower and 480 pound feet.

A more powerful output is available on the Timberline trim and on the Limited with the Stealth Performance package that boosts those figures to 440 horses and 510 pound-feet. The Timberline model reached 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds at our test track, surpassing the V-8–powered Tahoe Z71 by a whopping 2.4 seconds; additionally, the Stealth Performance model beat out its 0.2 second margin from the Timberline's time.

The Expeditions independent rear suspension creates a smooth ride for passengers, though the driver may experience less than graceful handling and steering. The Expedition can tow up to 9300 pounds while the longer Expedition Max's rating is at 9000 pounds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Hefty haulers like the Ford Expedition certainly don't help preserve fossil fuels. Though Ford claims it's more efficient than a V-8, the twin-turbocharged V-6 engine doesn't quite deliver on that promise. The rear-drive is rated at 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway; the all-wheel drive version drops to 22 mpg highway. Both versions of the Expedition delivered only 20mpg on our 75 mph fuel economy testing route - which is part of an extensive testing regimen we utilize here. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As you move up the models for the Expedition, the cabin materials and trim pieces become more luxurious, with the Platinum trim being appointed with premium leather upholstery and massaging front seats. Both variations of the Expedition have roomy interiors and—unlike most competitors—its third row is comfortable enough for adults.

A three-seat bench is the standard for the second row, but you can replace it with a pair of captain's chairs if you want. The Max offers more interior storage than any other car on the market. Every model has a power-folding third-row that can be controlled from either the cargo area or back seats. Both second and third rows fold completely flat, making it easy to load larger items into your vehicle.

Are Ford Expeditions worth it?

Yes, the 2023 Expedition is a good large SUV. There's roomy seating for up to eight, a good amount of cargo room and a lengthy list of features. Interior quality generally makes the grade, as does ride comfort. This Ford has a brutish engine that's fairly fuel-efficient, but its handling is only so-so.

Is Ford redesigning the 2022 expedition?

Ford debuts redesigned 2022 Expedition SUV with off-road version, driver-assist technology. Pontiac — Ford Motor Co. on Tuesday unveiled a redesigned version of its full-size Expedition SUV for model year 2022, featuring driver-assist capabilities plus a new off-road series and performance package.

What's new in the 2022 expedition?

For 2022, the Ford Expedition adds a number of useful upgrades across the lineup — including upgraded interior materials, a performance package, and a standard 12-inch touchscreen with an even larger 15.5-inch screen available on premium trims. Also new to the Expedition is Ford's BlueCruise.
